The Fraser Institute’s annual Generosity Index measures this private monetary generosity using readily available data on the extent and depth of charitable donations, as recorded on personal income tax returns in Canada and the United States. The results indicate that, in recent years, a smaller proportion of Canadians are generally giving to charity and the amount given makes up an increasingly smaller proportion of aggregate income. Most notably, however, the index shows that private monetary generosity in Canada is considerably lower than in the United States.
