On May 10, 2013, former IRS official Lois Lerner revealed that the IRS had targeted Tea Party and other conservative organizations. A May 14 Treasury report detailed the “inappropriate criteria” used by the IRS to identify for review the applications of conservative organizations for tax-exempt status. The same day, Attorney General Eric Holder announced that the Justice Department was opening an investigation and “was coordinating with the FBI.” Since then, the Justice Department has refused to provide any information to Congress on the investigation’s status. Nine months in, dozens of targeted conservative groups have not been contacted by any FBI agents. Then, there is the troubling selection of a Civil Rights Division lawyer and Obama-donor as the lead investigator when the Public Integrity Section of the Criminal Division always investigates this type of public corruption. These factors raise substantial questions about whether or not a serious, unbiased investigation is being conducted.
