As in previous years, the influence of Washington's public-sector labor unions was dramatic in 2014. Three of the five top lobbying spenders were labor unions. This massive influence allows some unions to protect their own interests at the expense of the general public, prohibiting fair competition in order to maintain their hold on certain jobs. This influence would be impossible without the collection of mandatory dues from union members. While unions should not be excluded from the political process, they should do so with voluntarily collected funds.
