The disgraceful state of the health system in America’s Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals should serve a vivid reminder of the personal consequences that would follow a full government takeover of healthcare. Government-run healthcare systems the world over subject their citizens to the same kinds of shamefully long wait periods that have left many of America’s honored veterans to suffer and even die. Last year, headlines in the British press documented the scandalous patient care, waiting lists, hospital practices, and financial debacles of its decades-old National Health Service (NHS). While America doubles down on government authority over healthcare, more and more European governments, including Denmark, England, Finland, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and Sweden, have been forced by public outcry to address the unconscionable waits for care by introducing new laws. We should learn from them and from our own failure to properly care for veterans and reject a government-run healthcare system.
