Analysis
Despite a wealth of natural resources and a booming economy, Alberta government finances fall short when compared to other energy-rich North American jurisdictions. With the strength of Alberta’s economy, it’s easy to assume Alberta’s finances are in order. But post-recession, the province has struggled to balance its books. While other energy-producing Canadian provinces are enjoying budget surpluses, Alberta faces a ballooning deficit. The problem is not a lack of revenue, but rather substantially increased spending. Also alarming is the sluggish rate of productivity growth, which could threaten the future prosperity of the province.
