Pierre Omidyar, the founder of eBay, says he wants to use his billion dollar fortune to do good, both at home in the United States and abroad. But in embracing a seemingly ever-widening variety of causes in his philanthropic efforts, has he abandoned the need for a consistent approach to his giving, and sacrificed coherence for trendiness? Though Mr. Omidyar’s rhetoric displays a commendable devotion to America’s founding principles, some of his philanthropic contributions have inadvertently undermined them.
